Harvest Community Development Update

Sandra Anisa’s Story

Sandra Anisa Agustian lives in Muara Baru Communityin Jakarta with her five other siblings. She has been receiving help from HCD since 1st grade elementary. Now, Sandra is at 3rd grade Junior High (SMP 21 Jakarta Utara). Sandra dreams to help her family financially by becoming a secretary of a big company.

Ibu Siti Apsanah, Sandra’s mom, runs a warung (typical Indonesian mom and pop store) at their house. On March 3rd 2009, World Harvest injected some capital to help her warung business grow through our Micro Credit Program. Ibu Apsanah was very happy because World Harvest not only helps the children with their education but also their parents with their small businesses. MicroCredit aims to help these families to grow and to become financially independent.

Life Story of Sariyanti Wijaya

Sariyanti Wijaya, from Sewan Tongyan Community has been HCD’s sponsored child since 5th grade elementary. She is now at her second year at SMK (Career-Oriented Junior High) Karya Bangsa at Tangerang. Since 1st grade, she has always been on the top 10 in her class.

Sariyanti is the 6th child of 8. Her father works at a mechanic shop and her mother runs a small noodle store.

Everyday after school, Sariyanti helps her mom selling noodle from 1 to 8 at night. The store also becomes her place to study. She dreams of becoming an accountant, aside from helping her family financially. World Harvest is committed to help and supports her to achieve her dreams.

(Currently Sponsored by Janice Budisetia from WH USA)

Anggi From The Community of Cengklong

It is commonly thought that Chinese descendants who live in Indonesia are financially sound. That perception is not generally true. Many Chinese ethnic Indonesian who live in Tangerang City, west of Jakarta live relatively poor. When HCD Team paid a visit to one of its community at Cengklong-Tangerang, they met a Chinese ethnic Indonesian child named Anggi.

His father, whose name is Ko Andi, is a joss stick maker while his mom, Ci Menti is a housewife. Anggi is the only child in the family. Their household monthly income is only about 400.000 Rupiah (USD 40). Half of that income is already spent on their house rental which costs about 200.000 Rupiah month. Anggi has been sponsored by World Harvest for 3 years and now he is at 5th grade elementary. When he was asked what was his dreams, and he said “I want to become a doctor.” He wishes to help both his parents when he succeeds with his career.

There are many more other children like Anggi. Therefore, let us continue support and pray for Anggi, and other underprivileged children that are still awaiting for help.

The Twins, Longing To Go Back To School

Rinna and Rinny are twins. They live in Perumpung Community, Gunung Sindur District of Bogor City (Southeast Jakarta) with their parents, Bapak Iyam and Ibu Sarofah. Financial hardships of the family caused them to drop out of school. Bapak Iyam is unemployed and Ibu Sarofah is a housemaid, washing clothes for families. She earns only about 15.000 Rupiah / service. She washes 3 times a day. With this amount, she could barely feed the whole family let alone sending the twins to school. It’s been seven months since they went to school. On January 6th 2009, our Harvest Community Development (HCD) Team visited the family, and witnessed their poor condition, where they live in a house built from plywood and floor with no tiles but bare ground floor, and they even cook using firewood. Seeing their condition, our Community Development Team is utterly burdened to help them. Thus we are committed to sponsor the twins and help with their educational needs, hoping for a better future for them.

Isnaya's Courage

Isnaya lives in bamboo mats hut with her old-aged grandparents. Her mom passed away two years ago and her dad left the family for unknown reason.

They own a family garden where they plant yams, parsnip and other vegetables, which are also their daily meals. The yields from the garden is limited but enough for them to live. Due to such condition, Isnaya has even almost given up the thought of going back to school until our HCD team came to offer her with the sponsorship opportunities. And now, she is back in school.

Testimony From Our Sponsored Child in Community Sewan Tongyan-Tangerang, Banten

My name is Lia. I am the third child from 5 children in my family. I have been sponsored by World Harvest since I was in 5th grade elementary. Now I am a 3 grader at SMK (Career-Oriented Junior High) Markus in Tangerang. I am one of the top 10 students at my school. My dad is currently unemployed because he got laid off and my mom is a housewife.
I am longing to continue my higher education in a university and also to work part-time at the same time so that I could help with providing for my parents and help my little brother with his education. I want to pursue a degree in business management so that I can become a businesswoman, with the hope to give my parents a better future, free them from poverty. Please support me in your prayer so that my dream can come true.

Regards, Mona M.

My name is Putri Utami. I live in Cengkareng Timur. My dad works with the HCD team in the community Cengkareng. I am currently in 1st grade Junior High 248 at Cengkareng. Last year, when I was a 6 grader elementary, I made it to the top 2 in my class. HCD gave me a present and I was so happy. I want to be on the top always because kakak-kakak from HCD (HCD volunteers) say that if I could maintain my performance, I would surely get more present. Hoorayyy!! Dear God, please give me the intellect so that I could make it to the top again so that my sponsor parents will be proud in sponsoring me. Amen.

Dear Kak Yanti,

Thank you for your gift. I am so delighted to receive the school uniform and the school stationery set from you. The uniform I had originally was already quite worn out, and I am so happy that I have a new uniform now to wear as replacement, and also more school stationeries. I am so happy. Thank you so much again. I pray that God will bless you in return of all your kindness.

Thank you.
